Switch suppliers before or after moving
I wonder if someone could share their opinion on this. We are on the fixed contract that ends 31 Oct 13. We will also be moving houses approx 5th Nov. +/- a week. Is it better to cancel the existing contract and find a new supplier after we move or switch to the new provider now and then move it to the new house? How long does it usually take to switch suppliers?
I'm a bit worried that the fixed deals disappear before we move.
Many thanks in advance for your thoughts

the chances of some deals ending soon are pretty high I would of thought due to impending hikes coming from the other big 5, its a gamble the longer you wait,
the cheapest M&S deal was pulled other week, and not long after came the hikes from SSE0 -
When you move house you have to accept the supplier currently supplying the house, give them meter readings and then register with them.....you are then free to start a switch can take several weeks.
You cannot 'take a tariff' with you to the new house to start immediately.0 -

But according to the advice given here you can take the fixed deals listed with you.

Is your existing supplier one of the ones listed with a decent fixed price tariff, because if so you could probably do the change over the phone and be in possession of the deal before you move.
Sadly, if you're looking to change energy company I reckon your far to close to moving and will have to wait (and hope).0 -
Thank you all for your replies. I thought to switch to the 4-year fix but now I think i am going to stay with Scottish power. I called their customer service and they said that the tariff (online fix March 2015) is new and likely to stay for another 2 weeks at least, so fingers crossed.0

I agree with the above.
We rang EDF yesterday to get on there fixed price to 2017 for our new property that we dont move into until 24/10. At first she said no as we did not own the property, but when I told her we had exchanged contracts, she said that I could in that case. The switch over takes 3 weeks, as you have a 12 day cooling off period.
Lucky for us, the house we have bought is with Atlantic, same as we are on now, so the billing until then will stay the same.Josey0 -
But you can't transfer the account over-you have to open an account with Atlantic/SSE at the new property. Then switch to EDF from there. No free lunch, and no free laptop
