My current free anti virus software (avast) has expired. Which is the best free anti virus software to get at the moment?

you have the best - just re-register it by right clicking on the avast icon near the clock, free for another year

if you've installed the 30 day trial instead of the free version, uninstall and reinstall selecting the free one

Follow Closed's advice and renew Avast for another year.

Microsoft Security Essentials isn't actually very good and that's not just my opinion it's also the opinion of the two most respected independent anti virus testing companies I.e.

https://www.av-test.org and https://www.av-comparatives.org

Currently, all the other Free versions of AV eg Avira, Bitdefender, Comodo, AVG and Avast all offer superior protection to that offered by MSE.

Kaspersky is free with Barclays online banking.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
• If Avast worked well for you then renew - I used to love AVG but after one major update caused me major problems I gave up on it.

I agree with the poster above about Microsoft Security Essentials - it's worked well for me.

• Re register for Avast, as long as you are happy.
• I am new in this forum. I have joined this Forum so that I could share my thoughts regarding virus removal or fixing threat. I found this forum quite interesting and hence I joined this forum. The site users are sharing good information; even I would like to share a bit from my knowledge. I am basically from New York, but I need to travel at several places for my business purpose and I also suffer from lots of virus problems in my Laptop. So I can possibly suggest some rescues to other users who suffer from same issues.:A
