Problem after garage fitted new cam belt

My opinion is that it's a characteristic of the car. The old belt did it. Now the new belt does it.

Except the OP has stated that the noise was originally there only for a few minutes, and now it's all the time. A car should not have a characteristic of creating an unexpected noise. It wouldn't have come from the factory like that, so it shouldn't be like that now. That's why Nissan spend tens of millions of pounds on methods of reducing NVH.

If the OP comes back with a decent description of the noise we'll know more.

This car could be 7.5 years old. It's unlikely to sound as it did the day it left the factory. My guess is the pulleys/tensioner/idler are just aged and the old belt squeaked against them for a short while after start up on these cold wet days, until it dried out and the noise was there still, just not as pronounced. New belt probably won't be a genuine part so will display different audible characteristics. I agree, its shouldn't make a noise, but it does, and the car has been back once for further diagnosis. The OP could try a different garage, even try a different belt, but none of these things are guaranteed to fix the problem.

However, if you read back through the posts, the problem has NOT been diagnosed at all; the garage the OP is using have said it's 'impossible' to diagnose such things as pump wear, which is patently untrue.

If that's the standard of their diagnosis, then a different garage may well solve the problem, as they might bother themselves to actually establish what it is.
  • The noise coming from the car sounds like a chirping bird and appears during acceleration.

I'm not very keen on the spray as I think it maybe only masking an underlying problem which I would rather get sorted. The car is only 4 years old so I thought it should not be aging too much yet.

To be fair to my mechanic he is usually very good. However, I think I'm going to try someone else for the repair.

Chirping bird noise could be a belt. Equally, it could be other things including an air leak...

Is this a petrol or diesel?
  • It is a petrol car. The other small problem I have is there is a very faint whistling noise when I use the air conditioning. Could the 2 problems be related?

Spray some wd40 on the belt and i'm sure the noise will temporarily disappear. Voila! You will have diagnosed that the belt is making the noise. Some cars do it more than others. If you trust your mechanic like you say you do then take it back a 2nd time and tell him you're not happy. Keep us updated on what he says/does.
