After seeing Martin Lewis on TV this morning I know I have got to get off my a**e and look at my fuel tariffs. I have just worked out that being on Economy 7 is not working for me. Now, do I ask my current electricity supplier (British Gas) to take me off it first and then investigate a better supplier/deal or can I specify to a new supplier that I do not want Economy 7? Is a physical change of meter involved? A new supplier will not do that for free will they?

Some suppliers require a change to a single rate meter, other will merge the 2 readings. IIRC, BG will merge. Meter change cost is normally around £60, but some may offer to do it for free if you sign up with them.
If you have an E7 meter and don't specify, then you will automatically be placed on E7 billing, as that is the tariff your meter no. is registered for.

  • Most electric meters now are digital ones which all show a total kwhr as well as the 2 rates. should be no probs do change my data collector to request a single "Total " rate. I ve already spoke to half a dozen eco 7 people today paying a ridiculous day rate kwhr price seeing as they all have gas central heating for years , and dont use much at all in the cheap rate hours. The suppliers are getting away with murder not explaining this to people, and so are the government who promised to let people know of cheapest possible tariff. With all these people who have GCH its certainly NOT with a eco 7 meter
  • Thanks for your replies. I contacted British Gas and they have taken me off Economy 7 straight away. I just have to supply both night and day readings from my present meter. I believe I was paying 25p a kWh during the day. I hope my electricity bill will be reduced now.
