Not sure, never tried it. :)

Okay, will go try this latest download and if it doesn't work, will try a profile transfer and see what happens.

Thanks....I hope to be back :o

Were you successful in running the scanreg commands and then rebooting the computer?

    I did the scanreg /fix.

I wasn't 100% on the scanreg /restore as it said it would restore the registry to 26 April 2006.

It's the same date as system restore said it would restore too, so I wasn't sure if that meant it would delete all programs/files I had made/downloaded/changed since that date or if it would mean some files would not work afterwards?

I tried dragging the user profiles across - it kind of works, but not totally and it's very user unfriendly.

    That's for XP, but thanks.

I'm a little scared that the new installed hardware (since 26 april '06) will fail as i've been reading up and all say that program files/software will need to be re-installed - not a problem, but one said hardware would as well, and that was installed by someone else.

Which hardware installation concerns you? It would be at worst, a new driver installation.

My newish CD drive. I think it's been installed since back in April 2006.

Now I know how to back up the registry, I shall do it often.

I don't forsee a problem having to reinstall a driver for a CD drive. You can always make a back up of all of your drivers before you begin.

    See how you go.

A friend who bought XP for his old PC before buying a new PC instead, offered me his unopened XP this evening as I told him I was thinking of buying one tomorrow as I was bored with my issues!

Anyway, it's installed and i'm lost, so i'll start a new thread

    Thanks for all your help!
