Upgrading bank account

Hello first time posting hoping someone can help.
I have previously had quite a bad credit history but it is now improving. All previous bad debt has now been paid off or dropped off credit for (over 6 years).
Due to previous problems I could only get a basic bac bank account with Santander and no debit card.
I've just been accepted for a barclaycard, first credit in years, and is only to use to improve my credit score.
However when I try to upgrade my Santander account to have a debit card (no overdraft) they still decline me?
Any idea why?
Also I'm pretty sure I could move to a Barclay basic account which would include a debit card but am concerned how much it will effect my score having a brand new bank account having been with Santander for over 7 - 8 years.
Thanks for reading I hope I've posted in the correct place.

1. Santander don't want you as a customer and would be quite chuffed if you left TBH.
2. Another bank will want your custom maybe apply for barclays as you say."You know when it's cold outside when you go outside and it's cold"0 -
Leave your Santander account open. Make sure there are no outstanding charges. Open your account elsewhere.
Credit question: "Time with bank?" - Santander gives you the answer.0 -
Thanks got the reply, could be that I had a loan many years ago with alliance and Leicester which is statute barred and I believe Santander own them. Not sure if I should go for Barclays basic account or a current account as if I'm turned down I don't want repeated attempts for an account goin on my credit file.0

If I move my account to barclays, and they take care of transferring everything does the Santander account get closed or stay open?
or would I be better opening the account seperately if that makes sense.0 -
Just trying to get things right this time around and not make the mistake I've made in the past.0

I would agree - try Barclays leave the Santander account open for now. If asked say that you do NOT want to switch your account.0 -
Hi Olewk
Like you I had bad credit in the past and can't even get a Barclaycard currently, but was accepted for a Capital One Luma account.
Following this acceptance I decided to try and upgrade my basic bank account with RBS as well. I put in an online application for a Nationwide Flexdirect account with 5% interest, not even a basic account, and was accepted immediately. Yet Lloyds still decline my business. I did default with Nationwide many moons ago but this doesn't seem to have affected my application.
Good luck for the future keeping on the financial straight and narrow!0 -
If you apply for a barclays account and are declined they offer you a basic account instead, so just the one application.0

Thanks everyone for your advice.
Looking at my current credit report i feel if im sensible i could be where i want to be in 12 months time. The only good thing to come from past debt, bad decisions and not having/being able to have credit for so long has taught me how to manage my finances better and getting more satisfaction in saving for things.
Just a little paranoid about applying for too much in too short a space of time and it looking bad on my credit report (never had to apply years ago they used to throw it at me).
Ive applied for and got the barclaycard and tried to upgrade santander account so the barclay bank account will be the 3rd time in a week.
I think i'll go in to barclay's and apply tomorrow.
Again thanks for all your advice.0 -

After reading your post was tempted to apply for the nationwide account but i think i'll stick with barclay's and see what the outcome is.
