natures menu v natural instinct

Decided I would like to wean Gizmo off the Sheba pouches on to either natures menu raw or natural instinct but have no idea which would be best.

Anyone have any advice/thoughts/experiences they would like to share.

TIA

I'm a big fan of raw so were it me I'd go raw. Sadly my cat just plain won't eat it. But both my dogs are raw fed.

Natural instinct is a great wet food and my boy loves it. He doesn't get it very often as cash is incredibly tight right now so I get hilife or feline fare pouches from the local b&m.

To be honest if your cat will eat the raw and you've hot the space go with it.

But if not you won't go wrong with NM wet.

  • The Natures menu raw is very disappointing ..... little nuggets of grey, pappy mush which neither looks nor smells like any kind of meat I have ever seen.
Natural Instinct is a far far superior product. If you are just feeding one cat I would defrost the bigger tub for 24 hours in the fridge, then portion up into smaller tubs (pound shop ) which hold a daily portion. Defrost one of these tubs daily to keep it as fresh as possible.
Nutriment.co is another good supplier with a similar product line......not currently available in local retailers though which the NI is.

Natural instinct, nutriment and wolf tucker are all good quality raw foods and I have had excellent service from all. It is great to order one day, knowing it will be there the next. It means I can order the maximum amount for the cheapest delivery cost each time. It takes up one shelf in their freezer.

I did try Natures Menu nuggets when we were away but my eldest dog wouldn't touch it :(

We've used Natural Instinct in the past and am currently using Nutriment..in fact the guys behind nutriment used to be part of natural instinct.

There's not much difference between them (if anything - the food looks exactly the same) tbh but I find the tubs from nutriment which are smaller in size easier to store and are roughly the same price.

  • Thanks for the advice everyone, I think I'll try him on Natural Instinct and see how it goes. I'm hoping he won't be as fussy over raw food as he is over pouches. Tried him on a little raw mince as a treat yesterday and he tried to steal the rest of the pack off me so hopefully that is a good sign.

No doubt he'll do his usual trick and once he realises there is 5 kilo worth in the freezer he'll go of it and I'll be palming it off on to my friends kitties.

I've been looking at Natural Instinct, how long does one box of 12 tubs last?

It depends on their weight. It says 2-3% of their weight so for Gizmo (4kg) I'm looking at around 80-120g per day. If he eats the maximum daily 12 tubs should last around 50 days.

If he'll eat it, it works out cheaper than feeding him Sheba pouches. I'm going to order the minimum order (5kg) and some wing tips and pray he likes it otherwise DH will be eating Natural Instinct lasagne for a few weeks :rotfl:

If he will eat it I'll order 5kg per month plus the wing tips and it should work out that every forth month I won't need to order any as I'll have a months supply left from the pervious 3 months. Unless of course Salem decides to change from a dry only diet (his choice not mine) then I'll be ordering 10kg per month and their food bill will be around what it is now.

I'm using the Natural Instinct beef tripe for my Lenny at the moment. He's an 8 month springer and a little underweight at 16Kg. Certainly not due to underfeeding but the fact he's always on the go and has 2 good 30-40 minute walks a day (otherwise he'd be climbing the walls).

He's has lots of muscle definition but can see his ribs a little when he runs so probably about 10% underweight.

He has James Wellbeloved fish and rice (he's intollerant to pork, chicken and turkey) but he just can't eat enough of it to fulfil his energy needs. Advised amount for his age/size is about 330g a day, he manages about 400g per day but not every day and is still not putting weight on. If I put out more than this he just leaves it.

Since starting on the tripe I feed him about 300g per day (in addition to his normal daily amounts of dry food) and it's definitely made a difference and hopefully another couple of weeks on it and he'll be much closer to an ideal weight. The vet did say though he'd rather see a dog slightly underweight as Lenny than overweight like most!
  • Our two adult springers are on Natural Instinct at the moment - have been for quite a while now.

Both are thriving on it - they are around the same weight so each have 350g a day, split into 2 meals. They are maintaining their weight and both got rave reviews from the vet at their last six month checkups. They are 6 and 8 years old.

Very pleased with the service of the company as well as the quality of the food.

Spaniels would give it a thumbs up too (if they had thumbs!)!

My cat won't touch raw either which is strange since she loves to bring in mice and birds to eat. We weaned her off whiskers/felix/sheba food and went for better quality like botiza or the butchers classics but now she being a stroppy madam and will only eat gourmet gold little tins which are full of crap as well. She will eat applaws though but at around £80p a tiny tin she can sod off.

You can always try some raw mince from your local supermarket just to see if your cat takes to this. I think Pets at Home do Natures Menu if you just wanted to pick a couple up to try.

My dog however is fed raw and I ordered both Natures Instinct and Natures Menu of a website called canine divine (gone bust now which is a shame) as it was offering free delievery over £10 and I only wanted a few to try. Anyway I tried the NM first in Chicken and Vegetable (favourite flavour) and she just turned her nose up at it. I thought she musn't like raw and had to throw it away. It didn't look appealing at all like mushed up cardboard and smelt horrible like rotten food. It also doesn't contain as much meat as the NI.

So I thought well I will give NI a go just incase and she loved it. I've been just feeding her raw from the butchers and supermarkets now but to be honest I am going to go back to the pre-mades but Nutriment this time. By the time you add up the price of the meat and the supplements and veg you get with nutriment food it works out same as doing it myself. Plus I don't think am getting the right balance, I work and study so don't really have the time sometimes and just want something simple to give and because of this we have anal gland issues again and now have to pay a visit to the vets tomorrow. Had no issues when on NI.
