Finding someone's name from address

Options
I bought an item from Gumtree and upon arrival it wasn't the same as the photo and didn't work.

I have the person's address but not their name. The consumer advice line have suggested a draft letter stating the SoGA. If the seller ignores this and a further final letter, then to proceed with court action.

The problem is, I do not know the seller's name, to address the letter to. I only have the postal address and E-mail address.

Can I obtain the seller's name using some directory enquiry service if I only have the address?

You could pop into a library local to the address and check the edited electoral roll that they hold assuming that they haven't decided to opt out of it

Google the address. 192 usually says who is living there

How did you pay them, and how much was the item?

The SoGA probably won't be valid with tis if they were a private seller and not a business. You can still sue them but as an individual.

No guarantee that the householder was the seller though.

    Phone them?

"Hi I'm x from Land and Property Improvement Grant Registries. Is this Esqui Bakshari?"
    "No, it's not"
"Could I speak to him please?"
    "No such person here"
    "Is that <address>??"
    "Yes"
"Oh dear are you sure? - We'd better update our records...Are you the homeowner? Sorry, didn't get your name?"
    "<name>"
"So sorry Mr Name, don't worry it's not for a spam list, it's just so I can update this file so Mr Bakshari's grant claim isn't processed for this property"

There are still sections of the SOGA that apply equally to private sellers as well as to businesses, one of them being that the goods sold must be as described. (section 13 of the act).

Myser, have you tried putting the address into Google and seeing what comes up?
It's sometimes posible to find a lot of information this way.

I did query with the consumer advice line whether the SOGA was applicable to individual sellers and apparently it is.

I like your idea paddyrg! ;) To be honest, was thinking of trying something like that.

keyser666 - I'll dig out the address and PM you. Thanks!
