What's happened to my wireless router/signal?

For the past few months there had been two wireless network signals that I was able to connect to. One was password secured and one wasn't. I assumed the unsecured one was my neighbours wifi, so I didn't connect to it.

My router is a NETGEAR router and the wireless network name on the unsecured network was NETGEAR, which I just thought was a coincidence. A few weeks ago I was unable to connect to my password connected network for a couple of days as my iPad couldn't find it/pick up the signal. Using the NETGEAR signal I logged into my router and was confused to see that my wireless network was in fact the NETGEAR signal, and it was also unsecured.

My password connected network called 'home' has completely disappeared. What's going on?

Turning off the router will enable you to identify and be sure which is which

go to the router config page www.routerlogin.net , wireless settings, change the ssid from netgear to anything you like, enter a wpa-psk encryption key, click apply, then connect using the new password. If for any reason you can't connect wirelessly after doing this, connect wired, and check the settings again

  • The network that I used to connect to (which I'd named and password protected) is no longer showing/detectable. I've changed the NETGEAR name and also the password but I'm concerned that someone is able to hack into my router :/ if that's even possible! Thanks for the help. :)

if you've setup a wpa key, it's highly unlikely

just login to your router, and check the settings, preferably with a wire.
