Switching utilities - does price get fixed on application

I'm probably suspicious of switching energy providers buy price differences and savings compared to what I pay now are worth me considering.
Having never done this before, if I start the process of switching today (by completing the application) and to a fixed rate, am I protected from any increase from that moment. I'm thinking that as it takes 4-6 weeks to complete the switch and potentially the company I'm signing up with may change their tariffs during that period.
Does anyone know how the process works. Can see Utilities are likely to be changing prices soon.

the tariff you get once completed regardless of price increases will be the one you signed up to on comparison sites
you also have the added protection of a welcome letter not long after sign up, if anything appears to be wrong you have 14 days from that to cancel,
all the times ive switched its been seemless, always the tariff ive wanted and signed up to on sites0
