Animal intruder ?

We have a hole under a 6 foot wooden fence in the rear corner of our garden and assume that we have either a fox or a badger visitor
The hole is round bottomed with all the earth pushed/pulled next door (diagonally opposite - if you get my drift)
Yesterday, I filled up the hole with a large rock.
And today - the rock is still in place
One of our two cats has been going mental recently - so assume that this is linked
What I guess I am wondering is - is there any way of knowing what the intruder is (there are no footprints etc) and what the best thing to do is .....

Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.0

If you spread some sand or sifted soil around the hole, whatever's coming through will leave tracks in it. Moisten the sand/soil a little - if it's too dry, the tracks will fill in.0
