Which Reader?

Hi I am registered blind but I do have good vision. I have a Sony Reader which my brother was given for his wedding and he gave to me after he got a Ipad.

The Reader needs to be replaced. I was wondering which Reader should I get?

I am hoping to decide by next Friday.

If you use Google Play Books, ie. on an Android tablet or phone, it will read aloud to you.

You can even change the quality of the voice.
I shot a vein in my neck and coughed up a Quaalude.

As I understand it at the moment the Kobo Aura HD probably has the best combination of screen size and options for fonts.
IIRC it has something like 7 font sizes and the ability to load your own fonts onto it - something I can imagine being very handy for some forms of eye problem (being able to choose a thicker font etc), it's also got a slightly larger screen and a higher resolution that any other readily available reader on the market.
However I have heard reports of getting books onto them potentially being problematic at times - it's also expensive for an ereader at about £140 without a case.

The Kindles as always are probably the easiest to use in terms of buying content and getting it onto it (also probably about the cheapest starting at 70ish, although the new paperwhite may be better if you need a good contrast), but I'm not sure how they do for things like font styles and sizes.

I like the Sony's in general from a design point of view and functionality with previous models - but have no experience of the current models (I've got a 505, as has my dad who has eye problems, and I was impressed with some of the later units).

However as Deamnine says some of the tablet + ereader apps can do things like read them out to you (no idea of how well though).
  • The Nook Glowlight is now only £49.00, and the Nook library is almost as large as Amazon's Kindle library. Fonts, size of text and adjustment of the backlight are all adjustable. It also has a slot for a micro sd card for even more storage. No sound though.

I just looked at Argos and it seems to be a good deal £49. It is wi-fi enabled.

Nook defaults to epub which is easy to manage, but as a family we're very happy with secondhand Kindles (the new black £69 model brought a tide of 'young' grey Kindles onto eBay at about £35 a time) and have a hefty collection of books in mobi format.

If you can, have a play with both before committing your money!
