And the annoying security alerts on the M1 - 3 in one weekI was just going to mention this very point. In this day and age surely the culprits can be tracked down?
Exactly. What is the point? What are all these hoax alerts achieving except disruption for the very people these dissidents claim to represent?
We'll keep phoning in hoaxes until England withdraws its troops from the occupied six counties and agrees to a united Ireland!
But hi mister - there aren't any troops here anymore! :rotfl:0 -

I remember asking the same question years ago - and supposedly the aim is to cause maximum disruption to act as a reminder that NI isn't a normal society and that the disruption will continue until "Brits Out" (which doesn't just refer to the army troops - it means until a united and free Ireland)Weight loss challenge, lose 15lb in 6 weeks before Christmas.0 -
It also disrupts the economy and can be used as a argument for a UI as NI will be financially better off then.0

I think they've overlooked a few things though, don't you? There are no Brits here, unless you care to call us West Brits. We are Irish. We've just chosen to exercise a self determination which doesn't include unity - the same self determination shown by the 1st Dail which chose the self determination of an independent state free from British rule, we've chosen to be free of Irish rule.
From the start it was supposed to be a federal arrangement as per the Govt of Ireland Act 1920. If we hadn't had all the mistrust, fear, suspicion, and violence, federalism may well have led to unity long before now.
No matter what way you look at it the minority who have brought violence on us over the decades have held the nation back and caused more problems than they solved.
We're starting to reap the results of co-operation now. I can see it and I bet others can too.0 -
I thought posh/aspiring people from Dublin and Limerick were West Brits, not people from NI?
I think of a West Brit, I think of Terry Wogan. The truth may be out there, but the lies are inside your head. Terry Pratchett

I would classify myself as British/Irish or indeed British/Northern Irish and I'm extremely proud of being both.0 -

You'd be very right Douglas but I think the term transfers ok.I would classify myself as British/Irish or indeed British/Northern Irish and I'm extremely proud of being both.
Nothing wrong in that. Many of us now just say we're Northern Irish or, if away from home, Irish. I do. I do consider myself very British in outlook however and I am a British ex-serviceman from a family with a very strong tradition in service.
I was in an Irish regiment in the army however and a succession of colonels always reminded us we were Irish first and that's what made us different - and best!0 -

A large percentage of the popuation consider themselves British or Northern Irish - but definately not Irish, you are an exception.
And of course there are still British here - Northern Ireland operates under British Rule, Stormont is simply devolved power from Westminster, they can take the power away from Stormont anytime they choose (In law - in reality there would be an outcry if they simply decided for no reason to take power away from Stormont).
Our tax rates, welfare rates etc are all still set by Britain, so of course the British are still here (and the majority of the population still want them to be - but the Dissidents don'ts and want to remind us of this)Weight loss challenge, lose 15lb in 6 weeks before Christmas.0 -

Our politicians cry a little too often about being powerless on the big matters such as revenue and tax. Would we be much worse off under direct rule?0
