Halifax Clarity problems in India

  • I don't think you're correct :)...but can't prove it as I don't have a Halifax card at the moment so can't check the detail on cash limits (the online T&Cs don't cover it in enough detail).

However, a quick google search seems to confirm that:

    1. The "cash limit" is the most you're allowed to carry as a cash balance at any one time, and

    2. It's per month, so my earlier speculation appears to be correct.

Happy to be corrected though. Do you have a link at all?
I am relying on the fact that Lloyds cards operate this way - thinking is that the back office side of things like this would have been standardised between the Lloyds banking group.
  • I have gone online and checked the T&c of the card I hold and they don't mention any restrictions (other than a daily limit) so it maybe that the 50% limit has gone.
Still cannot answer why OP's card has been declined everywhere though.

    Hi
I have used metro bank credit and debit cards in India last month. In one of the ICICI ATM,it had two machines where only one machine accepted uk card.It worked fine in Canara Bank,Punjab National Bank,State Bank of India & State Bank of Jodhpur .The HDFC bank was charging for it so i decided not to use their bank atm.

I was just wondering if anyone else had had any probers in India with the clarity, or any other card, and if anyone had any advice.

If you really want to take the money out on the Halifax card you could try going to a counter and showing them the card and ID (passport etc.) and seeing if they will allow you to withdraw it there rather than at the ATM.

However, Indian banks are not known for their efficiency but rather their bureaucracy so it may take some time.

It would be your decision if the extra time it takes is worth avoiding the charges vs the convenience of using your HSBC card at an ATM.

Tried using Halifax debit card to withdraw equivalent of £5 and card got declined. Looks like Halifax has major problems with their cards being used overseas. Obviously had backup cards so used Nationwide and worked instantly at same ATM

I went to Singapore last year and ATM swallowed my metro bank debit card without any reasons. DBS Bank was able to recover the card and they were prepared to return it to me if they would receive a phone confirmation from metro bank and although, metro bank told me that they can’t see why it happened, they refused to give any confirms to DBS Bank, so I've lost by debit card on the first day, but I don't travel without at least 5 different cards.
  • Just a quick update for anyone who experiences similar problems to this. After 2 months of travelling around India, Thailand and Laos, I arrived in Vietnam a few days ago. I then received my monthly statement for the month following the one in which I used up my withdrawal allowance and paid it immediately (as I did the month before). I have today been able to withdraw cash from an ATM using the clarity card.
So it appears as if you use up your withdrawal allowance (half the total credit limit) you have to wait until the next two statements have been paid to withdraw cash again. It doesn't make much sense to me, but I'm just glad I can use the card again. Hope this is of some use to someone.

    Thanks for your help everyone.

@westin - yes, I've tried half a dozen banks, maybe more. Including, off the top of my head - Citibank, Axis, ICICI, jodhpur state bank, Punjab state bank.

I guess all I can do is keep trying every ATM I pass to see if I get lucky. I'll be heading to Thailand in about 10 days, if the problem is resolved there ill know it was something specific to Indian ATMs.

In the meantime, if I do have a breakthrough, I'll be sure to update this thread if anyone else should run into a similar problem in future.

    Thanks again.

When I was over there I had huge problems and the only ATMs I could get to work were the Bank of Baroda and the State Bank of India (SBI).

  • Can someone explain again how this cash limit works?

I have taken out a Clarity card in preparation for a forthcoming 2 week holiday to Spain intending to withdraw cash and repay it the same day using online banking.

The credit limit is a rather low £1200 but I thought that wouldn't be a problem since I will be paying back the money straightaway anyway.

However this talk of a cash limit has me worried. Does this mean that I will only be able to withdraw a maximum of £600 cash regardless of whether I repay it right away?
