Introducing puppy and cats?

My friend is sick in hospital at the moment so we are looking after her puppy. It may become permanent as she is very poorly and in a few months time may not be able to cope with him.

He is a 5 month old Jack russell. Very sweet and caring, doesn't bite and is (90% of the time) very well behaved.

We have two cats- one is 3 and the other is nearly 9. We want to properly introduce them to see how they get on.

The puppy has barked at our cats through the patio. 3 year olds fur went up and her scarpered. 9 year old sat a bit back on the patio (I will try and attach a picture if you want to see??) and just sort of looked at him. His fur went up a bit when the dog barked but he didn't totally scarper.

Can anyone give us some tips on how to introduce them? And has anyone succesfully brought a older puppy/dog into a house with existing cats and it has been a success??
