txt files not opening in notepad

a small problem but very annoying...

any txt files i try to open are no longer associated with notepad.exe. when i bring up the 'open with' window and browse for the program, i select notepad but it just returns to me the original window with no option for notepad.
i tried downloading notepad2 but just does the same thing. if i go into folder options and try to associate the files that way it still does the same thing.
i can still open txt files in word but its a bit slower to open.

any ideas? ta

Try http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm tweaks 123, 305, maybe 326.

Check that notepad.exe is in C:\WINDOWS\system32 - look at version and date.

Try sfc /scannow.

cheers chippy. it was located in wondows folder but not system32 folder. works fine now.

Glad it was that simple. BTW there's a neat script here you can use to replace Notepad with Notepad2 or any editor.
