I hope someone can help me, does the 'sales of goods act' cover lost data on a faulty hardrive? I bought an Apple Mac Pro 2 months ago from Currys, it started going really slow then finaly went blank and now wont work. I've taken it back to Curry's who are sending it away for repair but say any data I have on it may be saved if I pay a fee for data recovery. My argument is that the Mac wasn't fit for purpose so why should I pay? They insist this isn't covered under the sales of goods act, can anyone tell me whether that's correct?

Data and it's backup (or lack of) is entirely down to the user and no responsibility of the retailer or manufacturer.
  • It's your data and your responsibility. You'll have it 'backed up' if it's important so it shouldn't be an issue really.

So you didn't back up even when you knew there was a problem with the drive?

I built a new PC and installed a brand new top spec (back then) 1TB drive.

Copied all my files and photo's onto it. It lasted a few weeks and failed. The realised some twit that may have been me had moved and not copied the files off the old drives. Oh dear.

I had to do a surface scan for deleted files. Took ages, Over 24 hours to scan a 250GB drive. Then all the files it found were names file0001, file0002 etc...

Took a long time to recover all my lost photo's. Lesson learnt.

Almost because i lots a 1.5TB drive earlier this year. But nothing i cannot get off the net.

When you can afford to buy an Apple Mac Pro for what (£1000) you surely could have afforded a memory stick (16Gb for £30?).

I think its what they call a valuable lesson in life!
