I have a local man, but my daughter says I will have lost everything and I'll need a new computer.

what are the symptoms, completely dead? If so, check fuse in plug, failing that ebuyer.com sell psu's for a fiver.

You can claim for any damage via your Power Surge Protectors Warranty.

That is assuming that you have a Power Surge Protector ..

you can claim off your house insurrance for these sort of thing's, just get the man in the shop to give you a quote and get in touch with your insurrance company.
