Models Own faulty nail polish

Options
I purchased a glittery Models Own nail polish a couple of months ago, about a week after purchase I removed the plastic and began to apply the polish (this one: http://www.modelsownit.com/products/nails/splash.html) and it was a total disappointment. When applied he polish does not contain any glitter, or sometimes only a strand when applied - contrary as to how it appears in the bottle. It requires multiple coats for it to be sufficiently glittery, and then the nails do not harden, but remain 'tacky', and smudge easily on clothing, etc. As seen in the picture, this is the polish after one coat, with one fragment of glitter, hardly noticeable.

So I emailed Models Own to complain, I received a response where they asked me to send on proof of postage and a photo of my nail when the polish has been applied. I actually couldn't located my receipt so I couldn't reply until about a month later. Anyway they tell me "Unfortunately we are unable to offer direct replacements for any products that were not purchased directly via the Models Own website. However as a courtesy, we would like to offer you a £10 online gift voucher to redeem against any future purchases" on their website. As I based in Ireland, where they sell Models Own products in Boots stores, if I buy a polish from the site it costs £14.95 for delivery!! I'm at a total loss here, shouldn't they waive the cost of postage as a courtesy?

TL;DR - Bought a Models Own nail polish of deficient quality, instead of a refund/exchange they offer a £10 online gift voucher but I have to pay £15 for postage. What am I entitled to?

You have no contract with Models Own as you didn't purchase from them, you need to contact the retailer and see what they say. Although that is based on UK law, as you are based in Ireland you would have to find out what your consumer law states.

However I am a nail polish addict and have so many different ones, I have to say I have more glitter polishes that coat the way you have described than ones that give an even glitter first time, especially the ones with large and uneven glitter pieces like the MO on. The ones with a finer glitter coat easier.

Again different polishes have different drying times and I have a few that still feel tacky the morning after applying and I have a quick drying but very strong to coat to put over them to seal them. Some you have to put on a few very thin coats for them to dry rather than just one thick coat.
  • To be honest, applying multiple coats and it still being tacky sound like an application problem. Glittery polishes should be applied really in no more than two thinnish coats.

Glitter polishes tend not to adhere as well as normal polishes to nails or to each other.

to me the site looks like it was made by a college student for their course work and does not look professional, the address when you find it on the delivery page is just a paid registered address. the domain whois details gives an address of what looks like a residential flat and then the tech details of the domain registrar.
All this would draw a red flag to me and i would never use them.

If you are in Northern Ireland then you should be charged UK postal rates and would come under UK laws.

Thats how the branding is. Models Own is a HUGE brand which can be found in almost every Boots on the high street. They are certainly not a company set up to scam.

As for the OP, glitter polishes are notoriously varied in their application. As was suggested above several thin coats is usually the way to go making sure the nails are completely dry before applying the next coat. The 'splash' range you linked to though isn't really designed as a stand alone glitter and it is actually described as a glitter top coat on their website. The idea of this type of polish is that its layered over another colour to give several effects as per this link here:

  • As said above, models own is huge, I have a lot of their nail polishes and never had a problem. Their branding is aimed more towards teenagers than anything else thats all.

Those glitter polishes always look rubbish. I learnt that lesson a billion years ago when I were a lass.

The product does state: "A completely unique glide-on glitter topcoat in gleaming jewel shades."

Have you tried it over the top of another polish? I usually do that with any glitters I wear, even a very pale pearl will usually help..

The issue is that it doesn't look like that when I apply it over another coat of polish - I have to 'fish' in the pot for other pieces of glitter.

Thanks for the input, but I find a fiver for what turned out to be a rubbish product quite expensive. I never pay more than £2-3 when I treat myself to one.

Thats how that style of polish is. For example I use a lot of Kleancolor, this one in particular:

Is a beautiful polish but to achieve the effect you do need to fish around for the shapes using a toothpick. It's just the way modern nail polish is, it's not a fault, it's just that glitter bits in some styles of polish are now so big that to achieve an even look you have to fish a bit.
