bathroom sealant

Hello all,

I did reseal my bathroom as the current seal on it started to open up as the unit bedded in or maybe I am to heavy and have gradually pushed the bath sink down.

Any ways, One part of the bathroom used to have a very think sealing and I took it off and reapplied the seal but it is keep sinking into the hole behind it and does not seal the tile to the bathroom. What should I do ? put some tissues behind it thus to fill the hole behind it and then apply the seal on top ?

When the property was built in 2012 the guy whom had sealed it had not put anything behind it or in the whole so I think it is either my seal or something I am doing wrong.

I didn’t buy the seal plus gun but just one of those that you squeeze (polycell)

mine is white . what I did was ,clean the old seal as much as I could, clean it using dry tissue and then apply the seal . wet my finger and rub it across to flatten it .

Any advice is hugely appreciated .
Also I need to do my kitchen and guess the one below which is transparent is the best option

If there is a big gap then yes, fill the worst of it with newspaper or similar first. Better if it's wet, like a sort of papier-mache, but let it dry thoroughly before you seal over it.

Remove all traces of the old sealant first, and make sure the bath and tiles are totally clean before you start. A wipe over with white spirit can help remove any greasy deposits.

Half-fill the bath with water before you start, otherwise the first time you do fill it, it will sink slightly and pull away from the sealant.

Finally, I really would recommend using the traditional sealant gun. Those "no-gun-required" packs are very fiddly to use in my experience, you have far more control with the gun.

Oh, and one more tip. If you run two strips of masking tape, one on the tiles and one on the bath, leaving a gap between them, this can help in getting a neat finish. Let the sealant start to cure for about 5 minutes after you've applied it, then carefully remove the tape. To any professionals reading this, I know you'll be throwing your arms up in horror, but for anyone that's not used to doing sealing it's a good cheat !

    Hope this helps.
  • I used expansion foam to fill my gap, cut it flush with the bath and then siliconed sealed as normal.

How big is the gap? Mine was probably 10mm.
  • mine is sort of 10 to 15 mm . what wonders me is how the guy before me has sealed this with no problems and nothing been put in there (behind it ).

If its a plastic bath and 3/4 rather than ½. If its a steel one don't bother.

OK then <throws up hands in horror>. BUT it is a good cheat as you say. Whip the tape off as soon as the sealant is applied though. No need to leave it to start curing - unless you've put it on so thick that it will all pull off. The trick with sealant is constant even pressure and using just the right amount - no more or less.

If the gap is that big the bath wasn't installed properly. You'd be far better off getting it redone - after less than a year I suppose you might get away with "at developers expense". No excuse for that size of gap with horribly wonky walls in an older property. Even less in a new build.

  • so that means there should always be some padding or stuff behind it before it is filled? meaning the developers have done it wrong ( cheap job ?)

No it should have been fitted so that it, umm, fitted. Cheap job? - absolutely!

You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.
  • bath is the topic
  • you shouldn't have much of a gap the tiles should come down to the top of the bath, unless they have done it completely wrong & tiled the wall then fitted the bath
