Energy Up Scam??

Hello,

This may be nothing however every penny counts at the moment and I've just got to get this out there.

As many many people I've had problems with my bills in this recession and am on an electric pre-pay meter. Question is this, as it's a PRE PAY meter, does this mean you're buying electric at a certain point in time for a certain price?

If so, could I "buy" £300 worth of electricity on my key BEFORE THE PRICES GO UP meaning that the transaction has taken place and the electricity belongs to me. Due to the fact that this amount of energy is mine, does this mean that the energy increase will not kick in until I've used that £300 worth and I buy some more at a later date for the new increased price???

Any view or advise most welcome,

Many Thanks.

No. The payments you purchase are tokens of money, not energy. You are adding a balance of cash to your meter. The price the meter charges day by day is not guaranteed to be the final price.

If you do top up £300 before a price change the meter will continue to charge you the OLD prices after the change and you will be building up arrears - the tariff the meter charges will not update until next you buy tokens from a shop and place it in the meter. It will then start collecting the back-dated price increase as arrears payments!
  • Thank you for your information.

I might have known they would not allow you to buy wisely! I was thinking about it because I have to buy oil also for my heating @ 500 litres a time and I only see the price increase when I 'Top Up'

Although, It clearly shouldn't be called a Pre Pay meter if in fact that ISN'T what you're doing? Certainly misleading to customers hence my initial question.

How would one stock up on electricity? Big battery :D
  • Just checked and it's a pay as you go meter - paying as used - oh well worth a shot tho.
