Don't use sawdust, it gets up their nose and can cause respiratory problems, just line with newspaper and use shredded newspaper for bedding, you can use wood shavings if you want. Don't give too much basil it is high in calcium and an excess of which can lead to bladder stones. Excellent charity is the Cambridge cavy trust, it's for every body, details of the cct can be found on https://www.britishassociationofrodentologists.co.uk
We used sawdust on the advice of the vet. Our guinea pigs lived to a ripe old age, guinea-pig-wise, with no sign of any respiratory problems.0 -

According to Vedra at the cct, vets only spend a few days (or it could be a couple of weeks - can' t remember )studying exotic animals as part of their training, out of all the years they study, guinea pigs are classed as exotic animals. I would take any any advice from a vet with that little experience with a pinch of salt. The British association of rodentologist s have a lot more experience in their field of expertise.you may have just been lucky, but guinea pigs are low to the ground and sniff around for food. I would rather not take the chance when something could so easily be prevented.0
