At work on my afternoon break I go and get my car and bring it closer to work (don't ask!) Anyway, yesterday I pulled my car into my usual afternoon spot and noticed that a contractors van next to me had a small puppy in it. He was gorgeous.
The dog was on the passengers seat and looked very happy to see someone. The window was open a tiny bit....about 1cm. I began making cute little squealer noises at the dog and he started wagging his tail and came closer to the window. I was playing with him at the window for about 5 minutes when the contactor came over. I told him he had a lovely dog but he shouldnt be left in the van all day. He told me he didn't want to leave him at home all day. Only thing is , although the dog was tiny. He only had the front of the van as the back was packed with tools.
The man opened his van and allowed me to have a little cuddle.
Ok, I will cut rambling now.....The dog looks very well looked after...collar with his name on...toys on the front seat for him to play with but I still think its wrong to keep him in the van all day. He was there again today...from 10am until 5.15pm
What will happen over the extreme hot and cold months...he cant keep his dog in there. What happens when he gets bigger? When I spoke to this man yesterday he seemed like he thought he was doing the dog a favour...not keeping him at home along all day...but surely this is worse?
Anyway......Shall I report it or keep my nose out??

I'd keep out of it for now. If, when the weather turns very cold, the owner doesn't provide a way for the dog to keep warm, then possibly have another word with him again. It sounds like it's a very young pup, so maybe the owner wants to have the opportunity of taking him for a tinkle quite often?0

By the time the very hot and cold weather comes in he may not be having the dog in the van all day.
On one hand it doesn't sound ideal, however the other side of me also thinks dogs just love hanging out with their human mate, and this pup will be getting that, plus being integrated into everyday life from the offset so would hopefully end up a happy well rounded dog.
He doesn't sound from your post someone who is just dumping the dog in the van or a moron, he was happy to chat to you about it and also let you have a cuddle.
Who knows, as he gets older he may be hanging out with his dad most of the day rather than being in the van.....just what the dog would love.Yep...still at it, working out how to retire early.:D....... Going to have to rethink that scenario as have been screwed over by the company. A work in progress.0 -
when the pup is a little older or rather is 'trained' the owner may well be taking him into work with him. I know people who do this! One truck driver takes his doggy mate with him all over the country! the dog seems to love it!
another, who is a painter and decorator takes his dog too - he is 'on the payroll' as 'decorators mate' and for a weekly rate of a box of markies his job is to fetch and carry tools! lol0 -
I would just keep an eye on the situation for now. I remember seeing a picture in the paper of a roofer who took his dog to work with him. The dog climbed the ladder and sat on the roof while his owner worked.0

Definitely just stay out of it for now. The pup seems loved and well cared for.
My son is a plumber and has frequently taken family dogs to work with him rather than leave them home alone all day in a crate.
The contractor will have a lunch break and two tea breaks during the day so it's not like the pup is ignored from 10 am till 515pm. Not if the contractor wants anything left of his van, that is!
The pup seems lucky that he is so well cared for really.0 -
I would leave it. hubbie started taking mine to work as his a parcel courier and a women told him he was disgusting. the dog was only left for a few minutes whilst he delivered the parcels and he was parked outside the building, with the windows open.. poor dogs now bored at home all day she loved going to work and being made a fuss of by his customers.0

I know a few tradesmen who do this. The dog is much happier going to work with his "dad" than being home alone all day, and the dog gets out to play every couple of hours or so, when dad has a break. One friend's jack russell sleeps on the passenger seat in between his playtimes. As you say, though, I do wonder how it works in extreme weather.DMP Mutual Support Thread member 244

in bad weather my former bosses Jack Russel just snuggled down under any clothes on the passenger seat. the dog in this case seems to be in a similar situation with an equally caring owner"if the state cannot find within itself a place for those who peacefully refuse to worship at its temples, then it’s the state that’s become extreme".Revd Dr Giles Fraser on Radio 4 20170

That's ridiculous. I would have told her to mind her own flippin' business! I know a bricklayer and he takes his dog to work with him. The dog sits next to him while he's working and when he gets tired he asks to get back in the van for a snooze. Some dogs love being in a vehicle, even when it's stationary.
OP, I'd keep out of it if I was you. There's a lot worse situations that pup could be in. I think the owner is just trying to do what's right for now.

Thanks for all of you replies. I will just keep an eye out.
