Best Price Loft Insulation

Our loft has very little insulation, and what it does have is really old!

It's like old grey fibre-like paper stuff that's only an inch or so thick.

I'd like to just roll out some insulation to keep the heating costs down but not sure where to get a good deal!

I've found posts from years back about subsidised rolls of insulation but can't find any of these still on - only people pushing commercial insulation companies when I'm happy to DIY (and earn enough not to get any benefits and so would have to pay anyway!).

Anyone any ideas on the best place to get stuff and do I leave the old stuff and just roll on top or will I have to get all the old stuff out first?

Thanks All,
Adam

No subsidies at all and not likely to be for a long time or a change of government/policy.

Forget the big sheds, they are all very expensive. Search out the net, ebay worked for us a couple of weeks ago.

Our best deal was 75sq mtr @ 200mm thick for £228 delivered, I don't think you will find cheaper although it seems expensive compared to the subsidised price.

Law the new stuff on top, don't bother with the mess of stripping out, plus even what's down at present will help a little.
Try to post a link for you shortly.

    edit.

I second Wickes as being the best deal I could find at the moment for topping up my loft. It's not hugely cheap, but 30% off the list price for the 100mm or the 170mm thick basic insulation is better than anywhere else I could find.

I just got a load of this stuff:

    http://www.roofingsuperstore.co.uk/product/insulation-2/loft-roll/glass-wool/knauf-combi-loft-roll-200mm-thick-593m2-pack.html

Cheaper than the local big DIY places even when factoring in delivery.

Just paid £20 for 200mm roll of insulation from Wickes and from memory the 170mm was the same and 100mm was a bit cheaper
  • Looking for cheap top layer insulation to go at right angles to my base layer. Went into Wickes today and noticed that their top layer at £20 a role mentions "perforated to 400mm and 600mm for easy fit". Seems to mention this on all of their insulation.

The last time I bought top layer, the width was around 1.2m with no perforations.

I can understand if the base layer is sized up for 600mm and 400mm but don't understand why the top layer is also 600/400. I asked the sales rep about this and he didn't seem to understand the difference.

I assume perforations means that the insulation tears easily, so maybe no good for a top layer?

Does anyone know of any other top layer that’s not perforated?

The perforation are there just so you can break the roll down if needed.

They are negligible in leak effect and the perforated roll is quite suited for full width layering.
The only downside is that you are probably paying for the perforations, :D

I just paid £160 to have my loft blown with Rockprime - a mineral wool - loose lay stuff. No mess, just took 1.5 hours - a pipe leads from the truck outside and the nice chaps blew it in - no hassle. My loft is now 370mm deep in insulation. The only downside is that you cannot realistically use the loft afterwards.

True, but if you need a central storage area, then you can board over earlier and blow off the insulation later???????
