Help! Hair so greasy after colouring it.

I'm getting to the age now where I am getting grey hairs coming through at the roots,i am not ready to let my hair grow out grey quite yet so I colour it.
Usually I just get the cheapest thing on offer and use that but I have been low lately and my husband decided to treat me to one of those new L'Oreal mousse colours.
Did it last night and it has left my hair really greasy, horrible, yucky greasy,do you think I might have put too much on?
How do I get it back to non greasy without losing the colour? It can't stay like this,i feel horribly self conscious.
Also for ladies that get grey at the roots what product do you use? I find sometimes I can see grey again after one wash and that can't be regrowth after a few days so I was wondering what others used? I'm not very good at these things.

Have you tried washing your hair again? There might be residue left in it.
Are you using permanent or semi-permanent colours? I think (might be wrong) only a permanent colour will cover grey effectively.0 -
I agree with above, the obvious solution would be to wash it again without using conditioner0

Thanks,i will give it another wash through later just with shampoo,i think I used too much and probably didn't rinse it well enough.
It's always a permanent colour I use but it just seems that some brands tend to wash straight out so wondered what other people used and which brands last longest.0 -

Permanent colours shouldnt really wash straight out, what shade are you going, lighter, darker?
Personally one thing I dont do is colour my hair myself but thats because Im blonde and even if I go blonder if I do it with a home dye kit it never looks right.
Last time I got my hair coloured I got it done at a hairdressing training salon, 20 quid and should be 3-4 months before I need it done again. Or there are colleges that would have done it cheaper.0 -
You should only put colour on the roots for the first 20mins, then blend, are you sure your covering it properly? Permanent colours don't wash out, the roots are re-growth, so either you are missing loads or not leaving it on long enough, maybe it's semi permanents you have used. If it's greasy I'd agree with earlier post there's still product in your hair.0

I choose a shade as close to my own colour as possible,it's really only grey coverage I am looking for so I don't experiment with shades much and I think I read somewhere that if you colour at home you should only go two shades either way.
I didn't know you should only leave it on the roots for 20 minutes though,i left it for 30 all over so it was probably too much which is why it went so greasy and yes I am probably missing some so I need to apply more carefully or get some help doing it,i have a really stubborn bit at the front that always seems to reappear very quickly so I need to concentrate more on that.
Anyway I gave it a long rinse then a shampoo and another long rinse and it is much better now, thanks again for the advice and tips0 -
did you use too much of the conditioner which came with the colourant? if you did then next time you shampoo, don't wet your hair first, just spread a good amount of shampoo in your hand and massage into hair, wet a bit and work up a lather, rinse, then shampoo again and rinse THOROUGHLY.
Dye normally leaves the hair feeling dry, so a 'heavy conditioner' is usually included - I have used all of it not realising it was meant to last for at least 3 washes! of course it left my hair greasy and lank!0 -
Hi, just read this and the exact same thing happened with me. I realized it is the actual product and because of the fact it is a mouse colour that you can reuse - apparently they put something in it which has a negative effect on some hair, which is weird as it is very expensive in comparison to standard hair dyes.
I used it a few times, as i thought maybe I had over done it etc... and every time (6 in total) my hair went greasy, which has never happened with any other hair dyes.
I went back to using the basic lloreal preference colour and my hair doesn't go greasy anymore. Hope this helps :-)0 -
