Help! Think Storm Might have Blown Ethernet Cards?

Hi guys,

Shortly after leaving my home last weekend (I work away from home), there was a storm in which there was a very quick power cut (out for about 10 minutes). My mother regularly uses a wired internet connection on her pc which I have rigged up to a netgear router. I also have a desktop connected to this.

Looks like the storm has knocked out both the ethernet cards in our PCs.

My question is any recommendations on how to prevent this happening again to both machines?

I live on the coast so we get some great storms. I have a power surge protector which has a broadband in/out connections, so presumably I could connect via here (OK too late for this card I know!), but Mum will also require these or is there a better alternative now available?

I would rather not use wireless for the whole house as I do prefer the speed of ethernet and use the connection for work and they don't like us using wireless.

Suggestions appreciated as ever. Thanks
