Abortion has to be the choice of the mother and father at all times and not some faceless politician.
    QUOTE]

I personally believe that the man's view is largely irrelevant, mainly due to the nature of it and ultimately is the decision of the women to make for whatever reason whether that is genetic anomoly or whim.

Religion should have no place in medicine or politics.

Everybody giving very sensible answers but we still have religious fundamentalists dictating this policy.

"England may be getting it wrong too but they've certainly been better guided since the introduction of the 1967 Abortion Act. That's how far we are out of date. "
This Act may be 50 years old, but Northern Ireland never implemented this. Our legislation on abortion is 150 odd years old at this stage apparently. The world was still flat...

The Egyptian government was toppled because it was implementing fundamentalist laws. and they had a political majority and mandate.
Days are gone when you can impose your religion on the whole country. A state should be secular and unbiased.

Religion is the toppings on the pizza, not the pizza itself.

I personally believe that the man's view is hugely relevant given that it is the life of their child that is in play, even more so if the reason is whim. (Obviously not talking about rape or abuse cases here)

As a person whose family has gone through what Sarahs family have I can honestly say the more people involved in the desicion the better. Itis for the mother as she will need everyones total support in the weeks to come. Also under the circumstances I would call what Sarah had a Medical Termination as abortion is a extremely emotive word. The term medical termination was always used by our Sands councillor and I know abortion is only a word but using the term medical termination really helped us .Sorry if iv'e rambled a bit but even though its been 21 years for us it seems like yesterday. I was gobsmacked at the stupid, narrow minded, intransigent, attitude of Bernie Smyth on Nolan last night.

Thanks for the link. We need to get rid of these politicians who are determined to keep us in the dark ages. These poor babies are only alive because the mother is providing a life support system. They cannot survive outside the womb. To ask a mother to go full term is barbaric and cruel.

The thing is, there probably are children with severe disability in the community because of this stupid legislation and it's us who have to pay financially for these tragic mistakes.

Blimey. Maybe we should get rid of everyone who costs the rest of us money?

That's not what I meant. One treads a thin line when commenting on matters such as this however so it's not surprising that an ill thought out comment provokes a response.

I won't dig my hole any deeper by trying to explain myself.

My heart goes out to these two women. They shouldn't have been put through such an ordeal.

I'm not absolutely for or against abortion. I think that it should be available in cases like this, but I'm uncomfortable with the idea of it being fully 'on demand'.

However, as sill says, in this case, it wouldn't even be an abortion. It would be more humane to end the pregnancy if a child clearly isn't viable. I can't imagine how horrific it would be to continue with it, growing bigger and having acquaintances/strangers comment on your 'pregnancy glow' or ask you when the baby is due.

For so-called 'Christians', some of our politicians are seriously lacking in compassion!

Excellently put Tara, I think we all share the same feelings here, no one wants it 'On Demand' but certain circumstances (as previously mentioned) really should be up to the mother.
I am trying, honest;) very trying according to my dear OH:rotfl:
