EDF Gas safety check

A couple of months ago I received a letter from EDF asking me to call them to arrange a gas meter safety check.

I had to call them about 3 times, as I was promised call backs that never happened, but a time was arranged (for a long time in advance, they didn't have any appointments close to the date).

The appointment was supposed to be for between 8-1 today. Nobody came.

I called EDF (twice, first time was cut off after 8 minutes on hold). Apparantly the reason for the no-show was an incorrectly completed form by the telephone operator, which the team that deals with inspections and meter readings hence rejected (would be nice to inform customer...)

The operator denied there was any such thing as a gas safety check, despite EDF sending letters out asking to call them to arrange an appointment. She then consulted with all her colleagues, and said the obligation was on the property holder to get a contractor to inspect gas appliances (confusing legislation I think with landlord obligations).

From researching, it seems that gas supplier have an obligation to (page 46):

12.13 An inspection under paragraph 12.8 must include:
(a) taking a meter reading;
(b) inspecting the Gas Meter and associated installation for evidence of tampering;
(c) inspecting the Gas Meter and associated installation for evidence that the meter has not continuously been in position for the purpose of registering the quantity of gas supplied;
(d) arranging for information in respect of any gas leakage identified in the vicinity of the Gas Meter to be passed on in accordance with the Gas Safety (Management) Regulations 1996 as if the licensee had been informed of that leakage;
(e) inspecting the Gas Meter for any evidence of deterioration which might affect its safety or proper functioning; and
(f) where necessary, and subject to the consent of the owner of the Gas Meter, changing any batteries in the meter.

The operator went away to check with lots of different places, four times reiterating there was no such check. Then after consulting a specialist she said there was such a check, but they had no way of booking an inspection, she would investigate how they did it and call me back. That all took a 50 minute call.

Am I missing something here - it seems simple, the supplier has an obligation to inspect every 2 years, they simply arrange an inspection, do it, and that is it?

But if that is all it is, how can EDF contact centre staff be so unaware of it?

  • I read meters for EDF, possibly they are so hopeless at dealing with you is because the rarely get bogged down in the 2 year inspection ritual. I have worked for them for many years now and never been sent to do one ,, ever, and no one else I know has either. I have complained to the Regulator last year that they havent been complying properly with the regulations. I think they may do a few token visits only ,but these Frenchies dont want to waste money abiding by the rules( and neither do Scotish Power ( Spaniards ) because so far none of our meter readers have been doing 2 year safety inspections for them either

    They may call them License condition 12 checks
    Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.
