BT Studio Plus phone - help please.

The model is the 5500 version. I want to turn down the volume on the outgoing message - even my neighbour can hear it! I'm wondering whether there is a way of doing it that's not shown in the BT manual. It's out of warranty and BT tech support charge more than 60p per minute for support including from the moment their "option menu" kicks in!
