Airing cupboard/cylinder - noise like a train!

Suddenly this morning I had to rush to the airing cupboard because of the noise. It seemed extra hot in there and I turned off the hot water and heating sliders. This stopped the sound and am awaiting a call back from our usual tradesman.
The gas boiler (Ideal Mexico 2) is quite old now, so I'm wondering if the problem is to do with it or just the hot water cylinder...
Ideas?

Difficult from this side of the keyboard but I'd be checking the pump & if it got that hot the boiler stat as well, plus making sure your system is full of waterI'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.
You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.0 -
Wild guess: tank boiling due to tank 'stat malfunction?
That would sound a bit like a steam train, (not a diesel). No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
I think it would be a good idea to pop up into your roofspace and make sure that the water in both your cold storage cistern and feed and expansion tank are still both cold too and that you don't have hot water/steam coming out of either vent pipe as well.
