Stop motion camera opinions please

My son has asked for a stop motion camera for christmas, he is 9 years old and while I see how this would capture his interest he isn't knowledgable so it would need to be quite straightforward. I've seen these two, and was wondering if anyone had any opinions of either or could see any glaring differences please? I'm a little out of my depth on this topic! thanks

Do you have a smartphone or tablet? You can get apps that do the same thing through the phone/tablet's camera and will let him see if he has the patience to do it before buying a specific camera, especially at those prices!

Given there just webcams with a bit of software... check out what kind of tablet or software only options are available, since you could then get more use out of a camera \ tablet with some type of tripod \ mount.. when interest in stop motion has waned - and your not just left with a webcam...

any camera/webcam can be used to do the same thing, along with various bits of free software - all the software does is join jpgs together into an avi

Thank you for the replies. He has a Samsung galaxy tablet, I had a look but the reviews of these say the software combines the clips into a video for you, I can't seem to find an app that says the same! I also didnt know you could buy tablet tripods, that is interesting as I think he'd use that.

If he's just going to doing via PC buy him a camera and some software for the PC. Then he's got a camera for generally usage as well.
