I have been paid £408 over as my wages went up by £1835 in the past year.I had no way of knowing how much i was gonna be earning, as i work as a supply teacher as and when needed.I have tried ringing the tc helpline but it is permanently engaged.Does anyone know how long they will give me to pay it back as I am by no means well off even now.
I saw this which said of your wages go up by less than £2500 you don't have to pay it back, but it is form 2005.any help much appreciated.

In the 2006/2007 tax year the annual disregard was £25000 so your entitlement should not have been affected by a rise of £1835. I would suggest requesting a full written explanation of the overpayment.
If you still have to pay it back you can ask for time to pay. They will ask you to provide details of your income and outgoings and then negotiate a repayment schedule for you. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. My wages went up around 800 quid for the year and therefor over paid in tax credits.
I was told i owed them 35 pounds odd, which they would then bill me for or if I prefered, to pay it off with several payments (cant remember the exact wording and it must have been a standard letter) within the week a transcash form arrived for the above amount and I paid it the next day.
I had thought i might just edge out of the tax credit bracket so was prepared for it! I was just under it last year, and didn't know how much it changed to.
Are you single? I am, so perhaps thee rules differ from that of families.0 -

It was originally £2500 but last year (06/07) they increased it to £25000 in the hope that it would decrease the number of overpayments. So theoretically you could make a claim based on an income of 10000 and get a promotion giving you a huge rise of £25000 and your payments (in that year) would not be affected.
You wouldn't believe the number of TCO staff employed dealing solely with overpayment explanations, disputes and reviews

I wouldn't pay any money back without at least getting a full written explanation. Your overpayment could have nothing to do with your income, it could be an error involving employment or hours worked history dates.
There are a variety of reasons why overpayments occur. Some caused by claimants and some by the TCO. For the cost of a piece of paper, an envelope and a stamp you could find it's not your fault and get the overpayment written off or corrected. This is a system account and does not represent a real person.
