  • At least it costs them to get the letters back. At least I think it does.

    :rotfl:fatbelly what a brilliant poem
  • I received letters some time ago for a previous occupant: after the fourth letter in as many weeks I wrote on the envelope any further letters addressed to this person will go in file 13. i.e THE BIN. Never got another letter.

It's a good idea, but realistically, your note is never going to get read.

Most of the companies will either ignore it, as your address will be the latest one they have on file for the person they're looking for (e.g. for a DCA where it's not in their interest to believe you or to give up chasing a debt), or the returned letter will be dealt with by a machine (or a jobsworth) and never actually make it to anyone's desk for removal from their database. More often than not the letters are computer-generated in the first place, and are sent out automatically, so I'd recommend calling to ensure your details are actually removed, rather than relying on a note. Even then, I wouldn't expect it to definitely work, for the reasons noted above.

Don't even get me started on this, I am astounded at how many people do not update their insurances/vehicle registrations/electoral roll etc etc, lazy/clueless or whatever it is, I am heartily sick of it AND the endless phone calls for the same person too. Furthermore I am informed that a debt colector will be calling for the previous tenant, ooooh I can't wait, and this is supposed to be a good road/area. Some of this correspondence is for the owners too, who look down their nose at we mere tenants with a lower intellect as we do not own a property. AXE TO GRIND?.............YES

Ha, I can do better than that - I get phone calls from people wanting to speak to a person who has NEVER lived in my house. I did a bit of sleuthing and discovered that my phone number (which was given to me by BT when I moved in, the previous owner didn't have a BT line) has long been quoted in a business advert for luxury bathrooms/showers. I also discovered that the registered address of the "company" doesn't exist and where it is supposed to be wouldn't have the same local area code as my phone anyway, and their website immediately opens up that of some fancy shower company - in America! A little more poking about produced someone of the same name as the person callers always want to speak to, living not too far away and anyone wanting brochures etc for their bathroom fittings has to write to a PO box number. I immediately rang Trading Standards and asked them to look into the whole set up as the callers I get are usually not in a very good mood with Mr K! Since then I have had far fewer calls although my answerphone has had the odd message asking about their order for taps or whatever. I'm pretty sure the whole thing is a scam though.
  • I've had similar problems and after 3 years of "Return to sender, not known at this address" I lost my rag and wrote in large letters in black marker pen "STILL NOT KNOWN AT THIS ADDRESS, PLEASE AMEND YOUR RECORDS AND STOP HARASSING ME OR I WILL BE FORCED TO TAKE LEGAL ADVICE". I never got another one. I think even if letters are dealt with by a machine, the person feeding them into the machine would have to flag this up to someone!

  • I got rather fed up with the amount of letters for the previous tenant so in the end I put on the envelope that they left the property due to non- payment of rent and rents arrears (which was true) with the date they left and they soon stopped the letters.

I came to the opinion that a reasonable percentage of letters I was putting back in the post box marked "no longer at this address please return to sender" were not actually being returned by Royal Mail.

So I started writing "no longer at this address please remove this person from your mailing list" on the letter and putting it inside another envelope addressed to the return address. I then used the free stamps I had received from Royal Mail for their non-recording of my recorded delivery letters. It did seem to have the desired effect of drastically reducing the amount of unwanted mail coming through the letterbox.

I don't bother forwarding mail or putting it back in the post. I just put it unopened in the recycling.....
Paid off the last of my unsecured debts in 2016. Then saved up and bought a property. Current aim is to pay off my mortgage as early as possible. Currently over paying every month. Mortgage due to be paid off in 2036 hoping to get it paid off much earlier. Set up my own bespoke spreadsheet to manage my money.
