Adding name on council tax

Hello everyone,

I'm currently in the military and need to provide some details of my living situation to claim Get You Home pay. I need my council tax bill, and two other utility bills but currently don't have a council tax bill. The main reason is, I am renting my parents house as they have moved abroad, although not indefinitely.

Is there any way I could add my name to both my parents names on the CT bill? Citizens Advice doesn't say anything about adding names unfortunately. My parents are reluctant to come off the CT bill altogether but would be happy for me to be on it.

Many thanks in advance

You could be added as an occupant if you were resident but you can't be named as one of the liable parties on the bill as you have no council tax liability for the property - the liability remains that of your parents.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

Who you rent from is immaterial. You should have informed the council at the start of your tenancy
