Phew! Thanks for that info Squeaky. There's definitely no meat products in the bin and nothing (veg) that has been cooked. I'll go out and top it up with more brown waste tomorrow.I have the mind of a criminal genius. I keep it in the freezer next to Mother....0

I only put veg matter in my compost bin but I have a good collection of worms (good) earwigs (good?) and slugs, they are giant ones and tiny ones too. Are they likely to be breeding? I have not inspected them closely enough to see if they are the same species
I have not done much with the bin this year as we are having building work and I cannot always get to it. When the work is finished will I be able to use the compost or will I be populating the neighbourhood with slugs. I am not too happy aboout killing them, though I suppose they have had a good lilfe so far in my bin.0 -
I have a huge ants nest right in the centre of my bin, keeps them away from the house which is good, but are they and compost OK in there?
(edited) Just found answer, am having a dozy moment, ignore me."And crawling on the planet's face,
Some insects called the human race,
Lost in time, and lost in space,
And meaning"0 -
I have an ants nest in the compost bin too ... but I am so grateful they are not trying get into my house like they did in the last two years!
A great side effect of the ants moving down the garden is that they are obviously very active on the lawn ... we have had a wonderful selection of birds in the garden this year harvesting them to feed their babiesEnjoying an MSE OS life0 -

soo glad I found this - also got ants in the new composter (only got it last weekend and it's already full thanks to OHs zealous use of hedge trimmer....). Actually, today he rushed to the bin when he saw I'd put the remnants of Derek (the budgie)'s millet spray (decimated) and apple and lettuce treat and took them out to the composter! For a lad from the depths of built-up glasgow he's turning into quite a little richard briers!!! as for the toilet facilities of composters I have told OH and the woman who I share an office with as she has one but there are no takers!!!!! Can I put budgie poop in there? But I'm going to say this once, and once only, Gene. Stay out of Camberwick Green0

Is it possible to do mini-composting? I only have a small patio garden so I don't have the space or the "filling" for a regular size one.0

Until I got my composter bin I used to re-fill the bags my multi purpose compost came in. Now of course, I use my own compost out of them. I have no idea how small you you can go but I suspect a bag half the size would still work. They're nice and dark inside tooHi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. So all I need to do is put my scraps and gardening odds and ends into an old compost bag, seal the top, et voila? (sounds too simple to be true!!)
If it works off humidity does it matter if I keep opening the bag to chuck more in?0
