Cleaning Flag stones

I have recently dug up my kitchen floor to replace with a 4 inch concrete floor.
The floor was orininally just huge (really nice) flag stones with a thin layer of self leveling for putting lyno down (Ithink).
Anyway I have managed to salvage the but they are still a bit minging.... Any ideas about cleaning these before I attempt to lay them ? and once they are down should I put some sort of lacquer on them to protect from flaking in the future ?
Any ideas or guidence in this would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Rus

You could try a powerwasher they are good at cleaning flagstones.0

Get a Karsher or similar, protect all your equipment/units etc with plastic sheets and shoot. The stones will be cleaned in no time (you will have to spend the next 4 hours cleaning the mess but your floor will be spot on)0

electric drill or grinder with a wire brush attachment. the mess will be awful though!
cover everything in poly sheet and have a vacuum cleaner operating next to the wire brush. close all doors except the door to the outside world.Get some gorm.0 -
Jet wash will clean them up, use this for the driveway and it comes up great - might get a bit wet in the kitchen tho :think:0
