Smoking doesn't have to happen in the actual room for the smell to permeate every surface in the house, believe me I know
Unless it was described as being from a smoke free home I can't see how you have grounds to return, if they're a heavy smoker they might not even realise0 -
I agree with PENGUIN OF DEATH. If you are a smoker you wouldn't realise. If it mattered - such as baby stuff - then I think it is up to you to you to ask specifically whether it is a "smoke free " home. If none of the above suggestions work I would suggest you wipe all surfaces with half a lemon that should do the trick. I wouldn't fancy using Zoflora if it is going to be close to a baby - its very strong even when diluted.0

try washing it all in baking soda & water as it's a great cleaner & also very good at deodorising things.0

I would soak it in washing powder and hot water, risen then soak in white vinegar and water, then risen that's if you can bung it in washing machine.I would also leave it out side for a few days before. Good luck0

I've had success in the past getting rid of smoke smells by sealing the affected item in a plastic bag with a charcoal cooker hood filter - like this one http://www.amazon.co.uk/Charcoal-Cooker-Extractor-Grease-Filter/dp/B002CXV2KA - and leaving for a few days.
Not sure how feasible this is for a bed guard - but you could have a go if you can find a plastic bag big enough.0 -
