Getting rid of smoke smells

Being a bit MSE I managed to get a hardly used bed guard from ebay for not very much. BUT when I got it, it was clear that it came from a smoking household. Any ideas on how to get it smoke-free and smelling a bit more pleasant? It's currently in the car, but I need to move it soon as it's starting to pong in there

What is it made from? In the first instance I would get it out of the car asap or you'll be needing to fumigate it ere long, too.

I'd give it a good scrub with sugar soap and then a decent airing outdoors.

It's just in the car till I can get it in to the shed. I'm not keen on it in the house

It's a plastic-covered metal frame, with rubber 'feet', and a fabric cover.

I'm hoping to get the cover off and in the wash if it'll come off.

wash or replace the cover; wipe the frame with grease cutting cleaner (ie contains ammonia or similar)

I would outside on dry days to air.

If however after airing it for a good week, the smell does not go, I would be inclined not to use it and chalk it down to experience.

Not sure I would want my child sleeping next to something that has been surrounded by smoke for so long.

Bung the cover in the washing machine with white vinegar, it might take a couple of cycles plus one with your normal detergent but the smell will come out. I'm not sure about the plastic part though.

Personally I wouldn't use it, I would also leave the seller feedback detailing why, someone who smokes in the home while selling such products should be informing potential buyers. Poor kids living with smoke.

Yuk. I wouldn't use any cleaning chemicals on it. I'd get in touch with the seller to say you wised to return it as it was not fit for use. They may offer to pay return postage or ask you to return at your own cost before refunding. I suppose at that stage you need to weigh up whether paying to return it would be worthwhile. Either way I'd leave appropriate feedback after the matter is resolved. I definitely would not be using it.

If the cover comes off wash it in the machine.. otherwise put the whole thing in the bath.. nice hot sweet smelling water and let it soak.. give it a scrub with a stiff brush it should come up like new.. One of mine once vomited on hers and I washed it this way.. they are usually plastic type fabrics so dry quickly.

I find it hard to believe (not you OP), that anyone would be smoking in a childs bedroom! Totally irresponsible....and I am a smoker, albeit I don't smoke indoors, and haven't done for more than 20 years.

The guard bit should clean up ok, would imagine that the smell would not linger after a good cleaning.
The fabric part, if smell does not come out after a wash, soak in a water/vinegar solution for a few hours, then wash again.

Machine Washable parts - a good wash in Biological Washing powder, as hot as the fabric will take. may take a couple of washes. and I would prob add a good splash of vinegar too!
metal parts - easier! good wash in any water soluble disinfectant (Zoflora is really good - but dilute as directed).
Any thing which cant be washed down - discard!
