Your relative is either biased or incredibly unlucky in his choice of country and work-place. I lived and worked in Benin (West Africa) for a couple of years, and your account is about as accurate as a description of Benin as it is of Florida.

And do bear in mind that Africa is a vast and varied continent: a country that has experienced decades of civil war and the collapse of government (Congo) will be very different from one that has enjoyed decades of peace, stability and effective administration (Cape Verde).

My experience in Ghana and South Africa is of moderate corruption but massive inefficiency, though I did feel in a massively privileged position being white, and people were incredibly polite and helpful.

Speaking to people who have travelled throughout the continent there are very few countries which are anywhere near efficient and incorruptible standards that we'd expect in the west, possibly Botswana but I'd welcome, any other suggestions.

    all very interesting stuff.

i love Africa, have been to Zambia, Zimbabwe and Egypt. my girlfriend is African too, as it happens.........so i guess i am biased.
    but i also don't like losing money:D

i am 39 and investing long-term. Ghana, Nigeria etc. are growing fast, and i like the idea of being invested there fairly early..

but, perhaps the right thing to do, for now, is to stay out of an Africa-focused fund.
