I am gobsmacked! Natwest bank.

I went bankrupt in April, I called natwest and asked if I can keep account they said no prob. OR said I can keep account and sent them a letter to confirm.

A couple of weeks ago get a letter to say they are closing my account as I am bankrupt. Call them and explain they said I can keep account they said as long as I dont let account go to zero I can keep it open.

We have all our money paid in to our account, I look online on wednesday to check my account and they have transfered all our money 173.00 somewhere and Cancelled our direct debits.

I call them and get passed from pillow to post as usual and end up being sent to my local branch. When I get there I am told I should'nt have been sent there.
They spoke to the lendidng team and I was told a cheque has been sent out and we receive it in two days.
Still no cheque today, we have had no money since wednesday. We called them today and have been fobbed again, the OR has spoke to them and they have said we should get our cheque next week, I caanot beleive they can treat people like this.

I am going to have to open an account with co op which can take ages. I am so upset. We have three children and no money.

My partner has just started his own business so the timing is really bad.

Sorry to hear what's happened. :( Have you tried the Nationwide for their Flex account? I believe you can open it in the branch on the day. If you can't get there today, some branches are open at weekends.

I can understand how you feel about banks. TSB swiped £195 from my account to pay my TSB credit card, despite (a) knowing I'm BR & they shouldn't be taking it, & (b) me cancelling the direct debit - they just entered my details manually instead. To add insult to injury, having confirmed in writing that I could still use the account, they now say that I can still use it but can't use my chequebook, debit card or overdraft. It's just as well it wasn't my main account, or I'd be in a mess right now. If I was going BR now, I wouldn't believe any of them that said I could still use my account unless it was one of those known to offer accounts to BRs. :(

They have the right to close accounts which is why it's best to have a backup account.

If they just closed the accounts, then at least you'd know where you stand. But when you get told that you can still have the account, & you sort out your finances on that basis, & then they take your own money out without consulting you first, it's wrong. It's as if you're being punished by the bank for being BR, when you're going through enough as it is. Yes, we'll probably get the money back eventually, but meanwhile you've still got to eat, pay bills etc. Even if the money isn't from your main account, you still need it. And when you're living the hand-to-mouth existence of most BRs, especially in the first few months of being BR, every penny counts.

You should have gone to a bank you didn't owe money to. Why should they give you free banking when you took their money and didn't pay it back. It works both ways.

  • Broken Hearted thanks for your understanding and support!! You should be called COLD HEARTED!

I have never owed the natwest money but thanks for finding out before jumping down my throat just what I need right now.

Thanks to everyone else who has offered support x

They have allowed us to go and collect £50 over the counter only after my OH got very angry though.

It doesn't say in the OP that (s)he owed them any money! Just that they were closing the account as she was bankrupt!

I was about to tell BH that you would have no way been allowed to keep the account if you'd actually owed them money.

But why mention it here, and not on wdiag's thread?

    EDIT: Sorry, my mistake.
