Hi there
Can anyone help, I like to make porridge the night before but soaking the milk & oats in a pan then heating up in the morning BUT when we tried this last year it took a long time to heat up gently & my eldest was starting to run late for school - can the oats be soaked & then nuked in the microwave ??? I was just thinking she could take a portion out & heat up for herself
Thanks in advance

Get a slow cooker - it will be ready when you get up.The truth may be out there, but the lies are inside your head. Terry Pratchett

I guess we'll stick with heating in the pan then - I though the microwave was a long shot but worth asking0

I heat porridge in the microwave - make sure it's in a very deep bowl or it will overflow all over the place. I use a small mixing bowl rather than a cereal bowl. 30 seconds should do one presoaked portion but really it's a to taste thing. You might want to add a little extra liquid.
Why don't you and your daughter try it out at a more relaxed time of day then when it's right it will just be an automatic procedure in the morning?0 -
I never pre soak just use deep bowl or jug and put in a pint of water and 9 tablespoons of oats (cheap ones are fine).
Half a pint and four and a half spoons makes enough for a large adult portion.
Put in microwave for two minutes on high take out stir and put back in for another two minutes then stir again.
Done and no washing up if you eat from the bowl.
If you do prefer to prep and soak then just add some more water in the morning or (milk) stir and re heat for 30 seconds stir again and then another 30 seconds until hot.Living the dream and retired in Cyprus :j

My OH just puts some oats in a bowl, with some milk, then 2 (1 minute, then stir) and another minute, honey in, stir, ready to eat.
The whole process takes 3 minutesmake the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
i sometimes soak my porridge for a couple of hours and then micro for two and a half mins so can't see a problem. it makes it more creamy. I have not had stove top cooked porridge so can't compare on taste i'm afraid.2019, move forward with positivity! I am the opposite of Eyeore :rotfl:0

I have just started using a small slow cooker for porridge for the whole household. It works well if done correctly and people can just serve themselves even if they're up at different hours.
I believe it's 1 cup oats to 3 cups water and a pinch of salt for a small portion for 3 people. I tend to double it for us three.
I don't put it on all night as I found it had stuck a bit on the bottom and had become too thick. I use a timer so that it goes on about 4 hours before I want it and it comes out well and is still good a couple of hours later. I've thrown in sultanas sometimes too which work well and various spices, cinnamon, all-spice etc. Very nice. A bit of a soak and it's simple to clean or bung in the dishwasher. The advantage of using the timer is that it can turn itself off if someone in the house forgets too (and you could put coffee on it too).
I reccomend it. Particularly given winter is coming!
I could make it better myself at home. All I need is a small aubergine...

I never soak my oats. I just put oats, milk, cinnamon and dried fruits in a bowl, microwave for two minutes then stir in some agave nectar. Yummy!0

I use steel cut (pinhead) oats rather than rolled, but I make a batch for the week and then just reheat it in the microwave. I find adding a little extra milk when reheating gets it back to a nice creamy consistency. It is slightly nicer freshly made, but steel cut take 40 mins so I'm not doing that every morning!0
