New flooring and skirting boards

Hi all,

We are having a conservatory built and as part of that, we're getting a new floor in the conservatory and the kitchen.

We've decided to go for J2 Flooring which is a hand scratched wood effect vinyl but as it's costing us over £1000 (including fitting), I want to make sure it's done right.

In the kitchen, it will obviously go under all the plinths on the bottom of the kitchen units, but for the conservatory, is it worth getting the flooring done before we have the skirting boards fitted?

If so, should we paint the skirting boards before they're fitted or should we paint them afterwards?

The flooring guy suggested having a skirting to match the floor but I don't like that idea.

  • Definetly put the skirtings on after fitting the floor, you will get a much neater finish and wont have to bother putting beading down. Personal choice whether to get matching skirtings, in our old house we had oak flooring with oak skirtings, but in the house we have now we put oak floor down but decided to have white skirting boards for a change, they both looked good.
We painted our white skirtings before they were fitted. However after the joiners had fitted them, and nailed them onto the wall, we then had to go round and fill the holes in and repaint.
  • Whenever we lay vinyl floor, we always suggest the removal of the skirting boards & refitting afterwards as you finish looks 100 times better and saves the need for any beading, so we would definitely recommend the fitting the skirting boards after.

If you are going to paint the skirting boards we would definitely recommend painting them before installation, as this will keep your expensive new floor covering paint free as the scratches may take the paint in and become extremely hard to get off.

    Hope this helps.

Have you considered UPVC skirting. Inexpensive and no painting.

There is every logic to removing skirts (or fitting after if new) for laminate or wood flooring because it hides the expansion gap. Vinyl flooring doesn't need an expansion gap so I don't see the need for beading or it going under the skirtings unless you are incompetant with a trimming knife and you are more likely to need/want to change the vinyl at a later date than you are with laminate or wood.

    Cheers
