Duty Free - Sharm el Sheik or Gatwick

As the title states where is the best place to buy Duty Free tobacco etc, this is our first time to Sharm el Sheik so rather than get our Duty Free at Gatwick can we get a better deal in Egypt?

Would appreciate any tips.

Thanks

  • Just got back from Hurghada. Cigarettes on Thomas Cook flight (B&H Superkings black) were £50 for 400. Duty free in Hurghada were 23.46 for 400. I would expect Sharm to be similar.

Personally I would buy your alcohol in the airport/airplane. There are duty free shops in Sharm but they are a bit hit and miss both on what they have to sell and price. I always buy mine in the departure airport or airplane and then go for a browse in the duty free shops in Sharm where I do get bargains from time to time. You are allowed to visit duty free shops within 48 hours of your arrival as long as you show your passport. There are three to my knowledge. 2 in Naama Bay itself and 1 in Old Market. There may well be more in other areas of Sharm (such as Nabq), maybe someone will be able to provide you with more information on that.

I believe it depends what cigarettes you want to buy whether it is cheaper to buy at the duty free shops in Sharm or the local shops. Beware though, there are apparently 'fake' cigarettes (made in China?!?) for sale in Sharm. Being a non smoker myself I can only pass on what I have been told by smokers.

    Hope this helps a little
  • Thanks for the responses so far, just to clarify when I say Duty Free it is more for perfume and English tobacco rather than cigarettes or drink so if anybody has any more info it would be appreciated.

    Thanks

Came back from sharm last week, think tobacco was around £32 for pack of five amber leaf pouches, pretty sure GV was on offer at £25 ish.

Perfume way overpriced, can get it cheaper on internet :-)

  • If it's tobacco you want then get it on the plane as a lot of shops in Sharm do not sell it. Plus it will probably be fake.
Get on the flight, at least it will be real.
