Paymentshield and depression

Have in place a policy with this company but didn't read the small print (I learn quickly). Now my wife has been diagnosed with depression and signed off since March. Company refused the claim because a specialist has to confirm the diagnosis. Treatment for this is done within the GP surgery so there is never a referral. Catch 22, does anyone know how to appeal against this as the money would be very handy right now to pay for Therapy etc to get my wife well.
