Slugs

We have a slug problem. We're having building work done, but we thought we were pretty much water-tight now with no obvious places where they're getting in.

We have pulled out furniture to see if they are hiding in the room somewhere, but can find no trace. In the morning the room is covered in slug trails (all over the carpet and rug ) and occasionally we'll find a slug, which gets shown the door and the salt pot.

We've tried lots to catch/get rid of them - beer trap, salt, leaving the light on as they only come out at night, but nothing is working.

Does anyone have any tips?

  • Are there any gaps around your external doors? If it's slugs already in the house remember they can travel miles in one night so it might only be one or two slugs already in the house. have you looked under your kitchen units? just put a couple of slug pellets in some strategic locations around your room and that may sort it. they aren't like mice or rats which will "rot" and cause a bad smell, they just dry up into little hard lumps

Really, miles? - are you absolutely sure that you're not getting confused with wolves or tigers or something?

Miles might be a slight exaggeration, but they can move a lot further than you might think. They can also squeeze though the tightest of gaps, only a few millimetres wide.

Copper tape, applied around any possible points of entry can really help. Slug pellets are effective too, but also very poisonous so be really careful if you've got other pets or children.

We're having the same problem at the moment so I'll monitor this thread with interest!

I'm reluctant to put down slug pellets and the only semi effective means I've found so far is to leave the lights off and then have a quick recce by torchlight in the middle of the night to catch the culprits mid-carpet. Watch where you're stepping though !

Thanks for the replies so far :). Kitchen units have only just been fitted (at weekend) so pretty sure they're not hiding there as this has been going on for a few weeks. I've avoided slug pellets as we have a toddler.
I'm wondering if a midnight recce is the only way to do it!

We also had the same problem. In the end the only thing that worked was slug pellets. I guessed that they were coming in through a couple of places and just put the pellets there - we later found one v. small slug. Couldn't believe such a small creature could cause so much slime.

    Good luck
  • I had this problem at a flat I lived in. I got up during the night to have a drink and was horrified to find my kitchen full of them.

The next night I went into the kitchen at about 3am and watched with amazement when they all went back to the tiny hole that they had come through. It was by the back door and in the skirting board.

These were really big black slugs you see in the garden the fact that they could shrink their bodies to get into such a small hole had me fascinated.

Once hubby filled the hole they never came back. I have heard that they live in damp environments inside the walls.

I had this to, slime all over the door mats  so I put a newspaper down and put slug pelletts on the paper ,shut the door so the dog didnt get in there , and in the morning had 2 snails and 3 huge thick slugs as thick as your thumbs  laying dead, that finished them off..................
