Advice with overdraft charges/interest

Hi there,

I think I am posting this in the correct place....

My girlfriend went into Natwest yesterday to ask for her account number so she could access internet banking again - she has not used the account for about a year - to find that they have closed the account and that she is due them over £600 in overdraft charges/interest and that the case has now been passed to Apex. It was a bit of an unpleasant surprise for her... She has not lived in the UK for a year now and although she didn't change her address when she left she has never received any correspondence via email from them saying that she owed them money.

The teller could only tell her the above and that they thought that she had maybe tried to pay for something with her card and that had started the initial charge which has just kept on multiplying... She phoned Apex who obviously told her she had to pay immediately but didn't offer any other information. She is back living in Ireland at the moment but about to leave for Asia next month to do some volunteer work for two years. She has only a little money to cover her living expenses there so is not in a position to pay all that money off even if what they have done is right.

Do you think she would be able to reduce these charges? What happens if she ignores it - will they just keep adding it on?

Many thanks in advance.

Eventually it will default and be sold to debt collectors. On return to the UK she will find her credit rating trashed and she'll owe far more than she currently does.
She needs to contact the Bank urgently, this is not just going to disappear just because she is going to live abroad for a few years. She is storing up future troubles for herself that might take years to sort out.

So your g/f has not been in the UK for the past year, and now she's off to Asia for another 2 years?

I don't know when you met her, but I suggest you move on lad and find someone else. Life's too short. ;)
  • Thanks very much Money.
