Peugeot 206 1.4i Automatic, STOP Light, Oil Light & Handbrake Light coming on,
The temperature gauge shoots from normal 90 right into Red zone and Stop light come on, along with oil light & handbrake light which flicker like they doing a dance.
This happens when you get the car doing 50mph .....
The oil & handbrake light are also now coming on at tick over.

Things done:
  • Have Changed the Temperature Sensor
  • changed Coolant Sensor
  • Changed Coolant in the system (this had to be drained and refilled as it was BROWN , not as in the brown with oil or anything, just dirty brown!)
  • Coil Pack has been changed
  • Have replaced ALL bulbs in the Dashboard , as when i got the car there was only 2 bulbs in there, they had removed all bulbs, clearly so i couldn't see any faults!

In the last 3 months ( prior to buying the car)
  • New Head gasket
  • New Cam Belt (Which i had to pay £90 out to have it adjusted as the bloke had put it on far 2 tight!)
We have done everything we can think of and still its not solved the issue,

Been quoted over £100 for an hour to have car looked at, but they can not guarantee it will find the fault, if it takes any longer than an hour then i will be look at double the cost and so on.

Plus they want £30 to take the car for a test drive to get it upto 50mph.

Then there's the cost of £70 to have the car put onto the Machine.

So we are trying to our best to look at without the huge garage costs.

Any help would be very much appreciated as at the moment i am without a car and housebound due to being disabled and its really starting to get to me! (plus my partner has had a ton of abuse over this as its stressing me out):(

So you have had the car for less than 3 months? I assume you got it from a main dealer ( as you are talking about £100 an hour labour costs). Did it come with any kind of warranty? Although warranty may not be relevant as you say you have done loads of work on it.

Why not take it to a local independent garage (get recommendations) that charges a more reasonable amount?
  • The costs are for labour from all the local garages, they range from £80 - £100 per hour...

And No didn't buy from main dealer, as its only supposed to be a Temp Car until i get my new one end of the next year.

So car has no warranty or i would of taken it back by now and shoved the keys up his......

Sounds like the previous owner had many issues and couldn't manage to solve it.

I wonder if the head warped when the head gasket went and he just put on a new gasket rather than re-skimming.
  • Thanks Jamie, I myself is thinking could be a problem with the head gasket also, ie he may of done a poor job? .. he works for a garage would you believe..
Would that gives me the problems with the lights coming on though?

The first thing I would do is find a friendly, local, independent garage and they can do a sniff test to check the head gasket and using a decent digital thermometer to make sure the electrics aren't the culprit throwing up false warnings.

Thanks for the info. I am really glad I don't live where you live with labour costs like that. Good luck for getting it foxed though.

Could well be electrical, although the other causes are fairly serious so it needs a proper diagnosis. I had a similar warning lights on and the radiator fan was also running on full constantly. It turned out to be a faulty earth on the bsi (?) module.

A dying battery can also cause strange effects.
