Do i need VIC test to tax car or sell car

I had a non fault accident and the third party insurers deemed my car a total loss. I was given the option of keeping the car/salvage as part of the settlement which i agreed to.
I have had my car repaired and had a new MOT put on it. To my knowledge the car has a VIC marker on it although nobody actually mentioned this to me. My understanding is that this is just an identity check so not sure why this is needed in this case? The car is insured and has a new MOT but the tax needs to be renewed so i am wondering if i can do this in the post office. I have the original V5 registration certificate.
Also if i was to sell the car can this be done without having a VIC and could i use the V5 that i have to transfer registered keeper details.
I have tried to find out this information on the net but am still not clear on this.

The check is just for the vehicle identity - not a different (stolen?) vehicle on those number plates.
You can sell the car, but if there is a VIC marker on it, DVLA will not issue a registration document to the new owner until a VIC check has been done.0 -
What catergory write off was it?0

If it was a category C write off then yes it will need a VIC marker. You don't need the VIC test if you're selling but you'll loose value on the car because the next owner will need to go through all the hassle of getting it done - plus take the risk that you're not selling them a 'ringed' car (a stolen car using your number plates).
It's down to you really. Get it done and get a few more quid for the thing or sell it cheap but loose the hassle.
I personally will not touch a written off car with an outstanding VIC check. Written off yes but no VIC check never because it's too much hassle to get it on the road again. Just getting it to VOSA is a pain because you need it to be roadworthy and many insurers won't insure it. Plus the new owner will have no V5.. it's nothing but a risk to even consider a car with a VIC marker.
If it was a cetegory D write off then you'll be ok with just a new MOT. VIC markers are not set on Cat D write offs.0 -
VOSA have a FREE phone number for enquires. When I phoned them to question the status of a car I was buying (it was VERY cheap), that had had a minor accident, and the owner had had a full payout from a third party and allowed to keep the car with dents, they were extremelky helpful, and coherent.
In my case they were able to tell me that the car was not a Cat C (VIC needed) or a CAT D (Nothing needed) and had no marker at all. It wouldn't have bothered me if it was a CAT C, except that someone would need to pay for a VOSA identity Check before it could be taxed, next time it needed it).0 -

I believe it is a cat c. I have checked the direct gov site and it says it needs a vic. I will get this done although i dont really see the point as i have had the car the whole time. Before i get this done can the car be taxed through the post office using the insurance certificate, new MOT and V5 i have as i have read they dont send tax reminders when a car has a vic marker?0 -

Roadworthy is a given if you are using it on the road but as far as insurance goes there are one or two that won't do write offs, the vast majority don't care. (and the one or two that won't are at the crap end of the market so sensible people will stay away from them anyway)
Cat D (and C) can just be used and MOT'd as normal when the old one runs out, no need to get a new one if the old one is still valid.
OP....you can tax it in the normal way at a Post Office and only need to actually get the VIC done if you need a new V5 either because you've sold it or changed address.0 -

Well a few replies back you were talking about selling the thing. THAT IS THE POINT. Did you not take any notice of what I said? - If you want to sell it then without a VIC you'll be lucky to shift the car at all. It isn't about how long you've had the car, it's about the buyer having a ton of hassle with it when they buy it from you. Naturally most buyers don't want this hassle and so they will avoid it unless it's going at a drop down price.. and even then most buyers will be suspect as to why its going that cheap.Brummygold wrote: »Before i get this done can the car be taxed through the post office using the insurance certificate, new MOT and V5 i have as i have read they dont send tax reminders when a car has a vic marker?
Yes you can. You just can't do diddly squat online with it as the government basically wash their hands of it until they know it's legitimately the vehicle the number plates claim it is.0 -
Phone your insurer and ask. Normally they would have taken all of the paperwork from you when writing a car off, but they may just see this as an admin payoff so they wont have categorised it at all.0

The reason for the identity check is that someone who has stolen another car might buy cheap salvage and swap over some of its identity plates to the stolen one.
You know that has not happened, but if you want to sell the car a prospective buyer does not, and nor does the DVLA.0
