Hi Can anybody tell me the best program (possibly free) to edit my tapes from my camcorder and then put them on CD or DVD.
I have tried Windows Movie maker and I keep getting problems with it so I thought someone maybe able to tell me a better program.
Also Windows movie maker seems to be able to get an hour or more of film on a CD, what's going on there, I thought that to get a good quality film on to disk you would normally need a DVD ie like films you buy so how is it fitting on a CD with ease, am I getting a much worse quality or something? I really want the highest quality for my recording within reason.
Also Windows movie maker offers me all these different formats to save in, ie something to do with PAL gives me a file of about 1000MB whereas if I let it select best quality for file size it is giving me about 270MB, what difference is that making and what do I select to be able to play it back on a big TV in highest quality?
Any help appreciated.

Hi
I can answer part of that question.
If you see selections of PAL or NTSC, these are the different TV broadcasting standards.
In UK we use PAL (Phase Alternating Line) and in USA they use NTSC (National Television Standards Committee).
So if you want to watch your movie on a TV in Britain then you should select PAL.

You could use virtualdubmob to convert to an AVI as long as the original format is covered by VDM, and then convert to DVD with DVDflick.
http://virtualdubmod.sourceforge.net/
http://www.dvdflick.net/ I however use convertxtoDVD its not free but very very good imho http://www.vso-software.fr/products/convert_x_to_dvd/ as it supports quite a lot of file types.
If the format is in AVI already all you need is DVDflick0 -

If you have a standard stand-alone DVD player, anything from SVCD to DVD(MPEG2) will do for high quality TV playback. 35 mins of video to a CD for SVCD.
If you have a DVD that can play DivX/XviD(MPEG4), you'll be able to get 1.5 to 2 hours of DVD quality video on a CD.
You can use Nero 7(Nero Vison 4). You can download it from their website; http://www.nero.com/eng/Downloads.html0 -

Thanks for all your help on all my posts bat999, I do understand Pal for the UK etc with TV's an that USA is NTSC, but what I dont get in windows movie maker is why I can select best quality for file size which is an option under making a cd ie a film you will want to watch on your TV and this save format does not mention PAL next to it yet there is one I can select that does mention PAL in the save format but this makes the file created 4 times the size.
I always assumed if you want lots of quality the file size gets bigger but the way windows movie maker selects the file on auto is ending up with it not selecting the biggest file format on offer. Hope I am making sense.0 -
Since you started two seperate threads, you should keep an eye on both of them.
The answer is in the other thread.0 -
You're making sense.
I use Linux OS, and when I author a DVD using their software I have to select either PAL or NTSC.
I don't know how to use Windows Movie Maker.
Perhaps someone else will help.
