Changing address and photo on driving license.

Options
I followed the advice on this site about changing my details on my driving license through Direct Gov, but got this message.
"Sorry you cannot continue with your online application.
Your licence is no longer valid and must be renewed. To do this the photo on your licence must be changed.
It has not been possible to use your passport photo on your driving licence as DVLA must be able to confirm your identity online and you must have a UK passport which is no more than five years old."

I have tried to do it through the DVLA site and it says that it will cost £80!!

Is there any way I can avoid this enormous fee?
(I know it costs £10 or £20 to change the photo)

You need to get the form from the post office and do it that way, I did mine recently and it was sent to me within a week.;)

It costs £20 plus the cost of a photo or some post offices will do it for £24.50 inc photo but you need the renewal reminder off the dvla for this method.

I suspect you're either looking at the passport renewal site or a non-DVLA "helpful"/scam site.

    Change of address = free
    Change of photo = £20

You can do both at the same time using Form D1 which can be obtained for free either here or at a Post Office.

Protip: If you have access to a decent colour printer and camera, you can take your own photo, make sure it's cropped and sized to passport standards and stick that in your application and the DVLA will accept it. I recently did mine and it was printed on standard photocopier paper on my GF's work's colour laser printer. Was accepted just fine, saved me a few quid and a lot of hassle.

I just posted about my experience on a different thread here https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/4786143

When I google searched for DVLA licnece address change I needed to be careful because some paid ads for sites that are not free come up first. Make sure you use the .gov site.

I suspect your problem is an inability to sue your passport photo. At my age we don't change much so they are happy to use the old one.
